Rouge Park Stewardship Program

Rouge Park Stewards are the eyes, ears and working hands in the park, helping to care for our recreational and natural areas.

Park Steward Application

​Choose how you want to serve

You can...
  • ​Monitor nature trails for fallen trees, invasive plants and trash
  • Drive the park regularly and use the Improve Detroit app to report illegal dumping and other issues in the park
  • Adopt a natural area to do volunteer work and monitor for problems
  • Adopt a recreation area to pick uptrash, right overturned garbage cans and report issues
  • Lead or assist with nature walks
  • Organize volunteer work days with other stewards and assist with large volunteer work events
  • and more...
​Stewards are asked to commit a minimum of 25 hours per year
​

How to Become a Park Steward

​Why stewardship is Important

  • ​The Stewardship Program provides an opportunity for the community to directly engage in the care and improvement of Rouge Park. Community support is critical to maintaining and sustaining this important public resource.
  • Stewardship is also a great way to connect with other people who share your love of Rouge Park while engaging in activities that enhance the quality of life for all residents, human, plant and animal.
  • By becoming a steward, you will help ensure that Rouge Park is cared for and kept healthy and beautiful for generations to come.

Training

​Orientaion and training will be provided to all new Park Stewards.

Park Stewards will...
  • ​Become familiar with the commonnative plants, trees, animals and insectsin the park
  • Learn to identify the invasive plants inRouge Park and how to manage them
  • Learn basic trail maintenance
  • Learn how to report illegal dumping,vandalism and other issues in the park
​

About Rouge Park

​At 1184 acres, Rouge Park is Detroit’s largest park. It opened to the public in 1925 and is named for the 4.75 miles of the Rouge River that runs through it.
Founded in 2002, FORP is an all-volunteer community-based organization dedicated to caring for, and improving, this valuable natural and recreational amenity for nature to thrive and thecommunity to enjoy.
