The Rouge Park Prairie: In 1999, the city of Detroit received an EPA grant to improve water quality by replacing mowed grass with native wildflowers and grasses. Michigan Wildflower Farm planted 15 acres of native grass and wildflower seeds in 2000 (see plan). The mowed 1¼ mile Prairie Pathway was added in 2010. In 2012, an additional EPA Grant covered a prescribed burn and expansion of the prairie with a seeding of the Butterfly Garden area, and the Greening of Detroit seeded a portion of the southern area of the prairie in 2018. The Butterfly Garden and Tallgrass Prairie areas are now well established and support a wide variety of plant and animal species.
