Prairie Pathway

Prairie Pathway

  1. Trailhead Location: Outer Drive and Tireman Hiking Project
  2. Mileage: 1-¼ mile loop
  3. Type of Trail: Loop
  4. Key things to look out for: Butterfly Garden in the center of the prairie. North end of the prairie is mostly native prairie grasses and the south end is mostly prairie wildflowers. Several butterfly, insect and native plant walks held there in Summer.
  5. Best times to visit: Mid-July to Mid-September for colorful blooms and plentiful pollinators but open year round!
  6. Accessibility: Mostly dry and regularly mowed.
  7. History: The butterfly Garden was the site of the Nike Missile Base from 1955-1963. Prairie restoration began in 2000 and has continued increasing the restored acreage. The Prairie Pathway was developed and opened by FORP in 2010.
