Ma’iingan Wildwood Trail
- Trailhead Location: Sorensen Recreation Area, Spinoza Drive and Sawyer St. GPS Coordinates: 42.346224, -83.245898
- Mileage: about 1-½ miles restored so far.
- Type of Trail: One-way, but will be a 4 mile loop once restored.
- Key things to look out for: Largest area of old growth forest in the park. Greatest diversity of wildflowers and woody plants.
- Highlights: Sorensen Automotive History Interpretive Trail, WPA Stone Promenade built during the Great Depression (late 1930s), stands of spicebush and rare rattlesnake root (Nabalus altissimus)!
- Best times to visit: April/May wildflower season and dry fall weather. Great all year round except after a winter thaw and after a big rain! Trail can flood but our trusty trail support friend David Oakley is working on by-pass trails around the floodplain routes so it will be hikeable in all but the biggest floods!
- Accessibility: Often muddy, a few natural bridges
- History: developed by Etta S. Wilson and the Conservation Committee of the Louisa St. Clair Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1935. Immensely popular until the mid-1950s with the Detroit News Hiking Club.
